Not precisely focused on main Basic air data activites, but yes, we actively support this outstanding 800 mm telescope project!

They are building the whole assembly from scratch, every aspect is covered, from engineering, including dynamic behavior study, to machining. The project includes the use of composite materials.

Hexagons completed! Almost… Update on the upper cage: the hexagonal elements are cut to shape and wrapped with two layers of carbon fiber to reinforce and protect – more the latter and the look actually! Vacuum bagging is adopted for this job to minimize the weight. Each element is 3500g which we try to lighten by taking material out of areas that FEA identifies as low stress i.e. not contributing to the overall stiffness. Work is carried out with a router and a jig to take the weight down to 3100g – target is under 6kg for the pair, so there's still some work to do… These elements represent 2 out of the 5 big panels with similar sandwich construction needed for this project. The others being the 2 pac-men and the last the azimuth table. + #cfrp #carbonfiber #800mm_telescope #finiteelementanalysis #telescope #altazimuth #dobsonian #science #astronomy #amateur_astronomy #deepsky #diy #discovery #amateur_telescope #starrynight #backyard astronomy #astrophotography
